Most of the pieces I do have some kind of personal meaning that reflect my life or what I’m experiencing at the time. Since I’ve been painting, I’ve been blessed with getting to spend time with my children. ‘Close at Heart’ was created when my daughter was 20 and leaving home. I could feel an emptiness creeping up inside like most fathers probably feel, like I hadn’t played enough or listened enough, or maybe I’d missed out somehow. I rarely pose a subject, but I asked her to model a few times before she left. Many of my pieces are about feminine empowerment and strength, but I know now this piece symbolizes wanting to protect her as she goes out on her own and wanting to keep the memories as close as possible.

I did this piece a couple years ago after my wife and I had been taking walks with our kids who were age 15, 19, and 23. The subjects in the painting are unknown, but I feel that the little girl and boy represent my wife and myself and the horses represent our kids. Although we are the ones guiding, they are always willing to lend support. My eldest son carries a lot of my weight as I look back to make sure we’re all together. My wife is looking forward with our youngest son and our daughter feels independent and wild in the middle but we are still there for her on each side.

This is on of my favorite paintings. I think it expresses several things about rural western life like resilience in the girl’s expression, patience in the dog’s expression and dedication to each other which is enforced by the rope. I grew up next to the Villard family who has been ranching sheep for over four generations. I asked to get some images of working dogs while they were counting and switching pastures. The bond between family, dogs, sheep, and land is what had the greatest impression on me. I think the whole piece represents the circle of responsibility.

I occasionally create a piece using red wine (Merlot) on cotton watercolor paper. Once dry, the painting is covered with an archival varnish to stop oxidation.

Ben Nighthorse Campbell: 1953 Air Force Airman Second Class, three-time U.S. Judo champion, 1964 Olympic Judo Team Captain, Judo Trainer, Deputy Sheriff, 5 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senator for 12 years, Jewelry maker, and one of forty-four members of the Council of Chiefs of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Tribe. He was driving the Capitol Christmas Tree from Meeker Colorado to Washington DC when I did this piece. My youngest son and I had the chance to meet him when the tree made a brief stop in our town.
